Sweating Your Horse

Add this to your website

Sweating your horse is the most common and effective way to reduce certain areas of the horse to enhance its conformation.  The neck from poll to withers is the area that sweating effects.

To obtain a long lean neck and maintain its muscle a neck sweat is used.  If your area of concern is the throat latch a smaller throatlatch sweat is most effective.

Texas Equine Mercantile carries only  SuperSweats, the brand we feel most confident in giving our customers the best and fastest results.

Thing you need to be aware of before you begin a sweating régime are :
1. Make sure the horse is clean before sweating.

2. Make sure the sweat you are  using is clean and dry.

3. Start the sweating process with no more than 20 minute sessions to prevent galling sensitive skinned         horses ( pink skinned horses are much more likely to be effected by galling)  Signs that the horse is reacting adversely to the sweating  will begin with flaky skin and if it continues loss of hair. Build up the sweating time gradually.

4. Always rinse the area being sweated with clean cool water. This removes the sweat that can irritated the horse as well as dry and bleach their hair. Shampoo is not necessary as excessive shampooing can cause irritation.

We recommend SuperSweats as we have found them to be the most diverse and the most effective.  They are constructed of closed cell neoprene which does not allow air to penetrate the area being covered. The neoprene is covered by a very durable fabric that allows the Velcro closures to be placed anywhere on the sweat. This make a single sweat a perfect fit for many different sized and shaped necks.

SuperSweats have two types of fabric - Working and Overnight.

Working fabric puts the neoprene right next to the horses body which produces maximum sweat in very little time.  These sweats are used to reduce areas of concern. They may only be left on up to 3 hours. Existing weather conditions can also effect the time it is safe to leave them on.

Overnight sweats may be left on up to 10 hours. Overnight sweats have a layer of fabric next to the body to slow the sweating effect. Overnight sweats are most effective when used to maintain the horses once they have reached the desired point. Although they are called overnight they are more effective when used during the heat of the day.

SupwerSweats have three types of sweats;
Necksweats cover the neck from the poll to the point the neck ties into the body.
Half  Shoulder Necksweats cover the neck and halfway down the shoulder
Full Shoulder  Necksweats cover the neck and the entire shoulder area.
